USING TABLES, Part 1

This is a table with visible borders. Image file size = 12 K

This is a three-column table with
invisible borders.
Duh.
Tables are extremely useful

if you want to

arrange text and objects

in a particular way.

Tables can have color in any cell.
The size of the outside border can be increased.
Text and images
are aligned

horizontally and vertically

in a cell.
Gif images can have
"transparent" backgrounds in a cell.

Recommendation:  Be careful how you use visible table borders.  As this table illustrates,
they can be quite distracting from the aesthetics of your page.
Tables can be

nested

inside tables.

CHANGING DEFAULT ALIGNMENTS

The default alignment for a table is usually left.  The default horizontal alignment for text in a cell is usually left. The text alignment buttons do NOT affect table alignment unless the table is selected (not just all cells).  Table alignment is normally changed in the table properties dialog box.  Rightclick the table and select TABLE PROPERTIES..

The default for vertical text alignment in a cell is usually the middle--although this varies in some situations.  Rightclick the cell and select CELL PROPERTIES.

The text in the last row of the table above (aligned center) is also aligned vertically in the middle.
The text in this table (aligned left) is aligned vertically at the top of the cell.

SPLITTING AND MERGING CELLS (AND ALIGNING AND ADDING BACKGROUNDS AND CHANGING THE COLOR OF BORDERS AND ON AND ON)

The first cell in the first two columns have been merged. Note how it affects the height of the cells at the far right of the table.

The cells
in this column
have been merged
into one cell.
And this cell
has a
background image!

Although you wouldn't want a table like this (gag) on your website, you can use some of the illustrated techniques. This cell has background color.

This cell has
a colored border.
