DECORATING THE SCREEN WITH BACKGROUNDS

Backgrounds are simply decorations for the user's screen; when the page is printed out, the background color and/or pattern will be "invisible" (although an end-user can change the properties of his own browser to print out backgrounds--a very ink-intensive process for a printer).

To Change the Background Color

Rightclick an empty spot on your page; select PAGE PROPERTIES |  FORMATTING | COLORS.

To Insert a Background Image (Pattern and Color)

A background image displays both color and pattern. This file overrides the background color setting. The image file is a small clip (gif or jpg) that is "tiled" to cover the screen.

Another type of background is a vertical border.  See the image at the bottom of the page.

Note that this background image has three colors:  blue, black (shadow), and white. The image is in a separate table so you can see how long the white part actually is.  This particular image is too long to fit on a screen with the typical resolution, so the reader must scroll to see the whole image.  For this reason, the horizontal scroll bar is now visible AND the image is placed below the main table at the bottom of the page.  Think about why this is necessary.

    1. Rightclick an empty spot on your page; select PAGE PROPERTIES |  FORMATTING | BACKGROUND PICTURE.
    2. Locate the file, doubleclick it, and click OK.

Backgrounds are also included with FrontPage themes (covered in another section).

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  1. Be careful with font color on your background. If you select a color background and change your font color to white, users with some browsers will be puzzled by their "blank" printouts of your page.
  2. Make sure your viewers can easily read the text in your font's color and size on your page's background.
  3.
  4. Consider thematic or stylistic continuity within your website (or within the sections of your website) when you select backgrounds.
  5. Be aware that most professional websites do NOT use background pictures/textures because they interfere with other effects.
